At the end of 2024, modern house—ultralight was an exhibition held by members of modern house—An Peng Lin, Blue Button, Cheng Yang Ku, and Ru Hsuan Wang—inside An Peng’s apartment. The idea came about as An Peng was preparing to move out, and the four artists decided to leave behind traces of life in the space through a mix of collective and individual creations.
The theme Ultralight draws inspiration from ultralight hiking gear, a concept that reflects deeper self-understanding. To carry as little as possible while still reaching the summit requires clear insight into one's needs—every detail, from equipment to food, must be accounted for. We extended this idea to the exhibition: What if our interventions in the space—budget, materials, concepts—were all “ultralight”? What would such an exhibition look like?
The show was roughly divided into two parts: the individual artworks by each artist, and a selection of furniture chosen by group vote to remain in the space. These objects were marked with what we called “the artist’s hand”—“hand” here referring to a unit of action. We aimed to capture flashes of insight from each perspective, each hand shaping, influencing, or colliding with others, sparking new ideas. This exhibition was alive—constantly shifting and evolving. The only constant was the intimate and blurred relationship between daily life and artistic practice in this home.
As with every modern house exhibition, we created a symbolic object for this one. This time, it was a key to the home—doubling as both a keepsake and an invitation card. Cast in 3D-printed aluminum alloy, the key was sent to selected guests. With it, they could "break into" the space and visit the exhibition at any time of their choosing.
